Acrylic Dance

Monday, April 21st, 2008

I was searching for scratchpad in Wikipedia for my EE4455 Embedded Systems revision. Unable to find it, Wikipedia suggested “dance pad” instead. It’s one of those multidirectional pads you dance on in the game Dance-Dance Revolution. Being a distracted Pisces, I clicked on the link, and saw that home-made dance pads can be made of PMMA, also known as acrylic glass.

Here’s how one PMMA molecule looks like.

And here’s a chain of them. Does it look familiar?

And this too…

It’s no wonder that they said home-made dance pads can be made of acrylic glass.

Make FYP Mutual and Together

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Phew, finally done with the first draft of my FYP report and academic paper… Hoping that the supervisors can give some comments to improve on it before the final submission.

I can only thank these two songs by Olivia Ong, which I played on repeat on IMEEM the whole day when I was doing my report. I thought that her voice sounds really nice, and the beat of the songs drove me to finish my report.

Make It Together

How to Pong Cheat Properly?

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

I can’t believe that there are still people who dare to pong cheat, even though it is now crystal clear who has ponged an entry, unlike the olden days. At least if you really want to cheat, then cheat smartly.

Here are some of the telltale signs of pong cheating:

  1. Those who pong have similar user names
  2. Those who pong have user names associated with the pong cheater
  3. Those who pong signed up at Ping.sg at a time close to each other
  4. Those who pong have no blogs or descriptions associated to them
  5. Those who pong use default avatars (thanks chillycraps!)
  6. Those who pong have the same IP address (currently only Uzyn can check this)

So please, the next time you want to cheat, cheat smarter. Be more creative with your user names and descriptions, don’t sign up all the fake accounts all at the same time, don’t use the same PC to pong, and create at least one blog (with proper entries) for each of the accounts.

Or you can also “cheat” the legitimate way: ask your friends to sign up at Ping.sg, participate in the community, and pong your entries. :)

Anyone else from Ping.sg has anything to add? Feel free to leave a comment. :)

Not a Pong cheater,
hendri

PS: This is an edited post. Please refrain from bringing up the past. Thank you. :)

Virtual Barbershop

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Don your earphones/headphones and listen to this sound clip for your (free) virtual haircut. It sounds so damn realistic! No screamers, I promise! Remember, don’t use speakers, use only earphones or headphones! Trust me, it’s worth the 5 minutes that you spend.

Edit: I did some more search online, and here’s what I got:

These super clear audio files are called holophony (holophonic sound recordings) and are designed to be listened to with headphones for the best effect. They have been recorded with a dummy head that has two microphones, one in each ear. The shape of the head and ears are designed to be similar to a human head to most closely replicate real human hearing. It’s pretty incredible.

Grab your headphones and have a listen. While the content itself isn’t that engaging, the sound effects will probably have you listening a second time.

Head over to the site for a (slightly) clearer sound of the virtual barbershop, and more holophonic examples.

My Major Should Be Computer Science

Which College Major Should You Be?
Your major should be Computer Science. You like nothing more than spending long nights with friends in the computer lab… which is a good thing since that’s exactly how you’ll spend the next couple years.

I think I agree with the test result… What should be your major?

Music Using Only Sounds From Windows XP and 98

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

This guy created an entire song only using sounds from Windows XP and 98. It’s pretty damn cool, if you ask me.

There’s also another song called Windows XP Rhapsody.

Power to the Point

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

In our professional lives, we are bound to have to give a presentation. Whether it is a sales pitch to a group of potential investors, or a technical demonstration for our final year project, it is important to make a good, lasting impression on the audience, and avoid the common pitfalls.

Don McMillan gives a good overview of the common mistakes in a Powerpoint presentation.

Hilariously.
