sp2 Orbital and Windows?
Dear Diary,
How do you put one particle in a box? And how did Schrödinger derive his famous equation? And why are there no solution to his equation?
On the other hand, what exactly is utility? And what does imposing tax have to do with the demand and supply graph? What happens when there’s a price floor or price ceiling effected by the government?
Yet on the other hand, what is an sp2 orbital? <geek mode>Does it have anything to do with Microsoft’s latest Service Pack for its operating system?</geek mode> What’s hybridisation and what does it have to do with the structure of a molecule?
I think I’ve got a lot to catch up… Sigh…
Service Pack 2,

The aforementioned box is not a real box. It’s a mathematical construct that represent the potential energy function in which the particle resides (0 inside the box and infinite otherwise). The Schödinger equation can in fact be solved exactly for one electron system. For other systems, you need to find the distance between the electrons before you can solve the equation. But to obtain the distance, you need to solve the equation. i.e. the equation is non-linear. Thus, we can only solve it numerically.
An sp2 orbital is what you get when you have hybridisation of s and two p orbitals. They arrange themselves and they make bonds with 3 other atoms (sp3 bonds with 4 atoms, and sp with 2). The term hydbridisation refers to the rearrangement of the electrons from separate s and p states to a combined sp state (sp3 is s, px, py, and pz; sp2 is s, px, and py; sp is s and px). It determines the structure of the molecule because the hybrid orbitals have certain angles and orientations. sp3 forms tetrahedral configuration, sp2 forms planar triangle, and sp forms a straight line.
You can find more info on Wikipedia. It might even have the answer to your econ question, which I have cleverly avoided.

you’re taking econs? Taxation has alot to do with demand and supply..think in simple terms of raising prices and the relationship between price and demand/supply. I can’t add much now. Getting hold of J. Solman’s text would be good…
