WP 2.5 Doesn’t Work for Me!
Sunday, March 30th, 2008Unfortunately, despite the success of so many people, WordPress 2.5 failed on me for some reason. While I don’t wish to speculate why it could be so, I can only say that the experience was not a good one. Thanks to tanfwc for helping me in troubleshooting the error, though in the end we decided we couldn’t do much about it.
I attempted to upgrade to WP 2.5 this afternoon. Thinking that it would be a smooth one like all my previous upgrades, I didn’t bother to create a back up. Unfortunately, the script to upgrade the database stalled and gave me a blank page instead. When I tried to roll back to WP 2.3.3, I couldn’t log on to the site admin, and got a password error message instead. Thinking that for some reason my password was changed during the upgrade process, I requested for a password reset. Even with the new password, I couldn’t log on to the admin panel, still getting the password error message.
In case I made further mistakes, I immediately created a back up of all my database and all files in the blog, somewhat belatedly. At this stage I didn’t know that the upgrade process had totally failed, and my database was actually preserved at the WP 2.3.3 state. Nevertheless, the fact that I didn’t make the back up before trying to run the upgrade script made me panic for a while.
It turned out that the reason I couldn’t log on to the admin panel of WP 2.3.3 was because for some reason, the attempt to upgrade to WP 2.5 resulted in some additional cookies that caused a “session expiry” error. Clearing my cookies solved the error, and I managed to log on to WP 2.3.3.
Still curious, I attempted to install a fresh WP 2.5 (i.e. with a new database) with the intention of importing the old database later on. Unfortunately, even the install script failed with a blank page. The last thing I tried was to import the upgraded database tanfwc had helped me create, but this failed too with a blank admin panel.
I finally gave up and resorted to use the older WP 2.3.3 for now. I may be trying to install WP 2.5 again in the future once I’ve found the solution… One thing I learnt today, though, was to always create backups whenever I have to modify the database, no matter how confident I am in the process.
