Because My Heart Wishes I Was There

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

This is the photo that I am going to use for both the Indonesian yearbook and the EEE yearbook.

If you can’t read the blurred text, it says “Computer Engineering”.

Because my heart wishes I was there.

Wishing to be in Computer Engineering,
hendri

PS: Technically, my specialization in EEE is Computer Engineering, that’s why I blocked the words “School of” that actually exist in front of the text “Computer Engineering”. However, the things that we learn in EEE are just scratching the surface of what CE majors do.

PPS: In case it isn’t clear enough, what I really mean is that I want to be in Computer Engineering because I think it suits me more than EEE.

My Major Should Be Computer Science

Which College Major Should You Be?
Your major should be Computer Science. You like nothing more than spending long nights with friends in the computer lab… which is a good thing since that’s exactly how you’ll spend the next couple years.

I think I agree with the test result… What should be your major?

Dreaming to be a CS major,

Learning

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

I learned a lot about life today, that things are not always as what it seemed, and some things are really not worth wasting my precious energy on.

Which reminds me of the song Life by the sweet-voiced Aselin Debison.

Taking a Step Back

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

I need some time to sort things out in my life. Knowing the consequences of doing otherwise, I think I’ll take a step back in some activities that I’ve always participated in previously, like Ping.sg and the PHP User Group. I won’t quit, just that I won’t be so active for the time being, until everything is sorted out.

Angry? Check.

Confused? Check.

Disappointed? Check.

Panic? Check.

Hurt? Check.

Guilty? Check.

I think those close to me will know why. FYP is just one of them.

I may consider moving out to a new domain name, but at this moment it is still under consideration, so keep your bookmarks and RSS feeds for now. I will still blog here, so stay tuned for such updates, if any.

Stepping back,
hendri

PS: Sometimes I really wish that I could be given the gift of expressing my feelings clearly.

Music Using Only Sounds From Windows XP and 98

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

This guy created an entire song only using sounds from Windows XP and 98. It’s pretty damn cool, if you ask me.

There’s also another song called Windows XP Rhapsody.

Can Productivity = Infinity When Effort = 0?

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

One of the jokes among engineering students comes in the form of this formula:

Productivity = Result / Effort

Therefore, as effort approaches zero, productivity approaches infinity.

P=infinity

However, this joke assumes that result and effort are independent of each other. It ignores the fact that results is in fact a function of effort.

R=f(E)

To understand this, let us have a look at a graph of effort against time of a typical student:

E_against_t_1

The hardworking student would have a graph that looks more like the following:

E_against_t_2

On the other hand, another type of students have a more exotic-looking graph, marked by periods of sporadic inspiration and scolding by supervisor, like so:

E_against_t_3

In all cases, what matters most is the total effort spent, which can be found by looking at the area under the graph. To simplify matters, let us call this cumulative effort just ‘effort’ from now on.

We can now see how effort correlates to result. Typically, the result against effort graph looks like the following:

R=f(E)_graph

There are three regions in the graph:

  1. Region of minimum efficiency: Usually found at the start of the work, where requirements are still not clear and the person does not have a clear direction to take.
  2. Region of maximum efficiency: When the person knows what to do.
  3. Region of saturation: When nothing more can be done no matter how much more effort is spent.

In almost every case, a student should strive to achieve the point in between region of maximum efficiency and the region of saturation.

It is clear from the graph that as effort approaches zero, result also approaches zero. Intuitively, we may think that the formula for productivity then becomes the following:

P=0_over_0

Unfortunately, this doesn’t make much sense mathematically.

This problem can be solved by observing that the graph indicates that as effort approaches zero, the gradient of the result against effort graph also approaches zero, i.e.:

dR_over_dE=0

Hence, we can utilize L’Hôpital’s rule, and the formula for productivity becomes:

P=0

It is clear that if no effort is done, productivity will be 0 as well. Therefore, the statement that “as effort approaches zero, productivity approaches infinity” is false. The key to the problem is in fact the result. No matter how much (or how little) effort a student put, the result is the one that determines how productive a student is.

In other words, if a student puts in a lot of effort, but comes up with a little result, he is considered unproductive. If he puts in a lot of effort and comes up with a reasonable result, he may be reasonably productive. If he puts in a little effort and comes up with a very good result, then he can be considered as productive.

This case study is also a good example of how a student can spend so much time proving something so trivial using an overly-complicated method, which reduces his productivity tremendously.

Unproductive,
hendri

Semua Tentang Kita

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

I’ve been running this song on repeat for a while now…

[…]
Teringat di saat kita tertawa bersama
Ceritakan semua tentang kita
[…]
Ada cerita tentang masa yang indah
[…] saat kita tertawa
[…]

Ok, don’t cry.

Hermit

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

I had two activities lined up within this week, namely the Singapore PHP User Group meet up and the Singapore Airshow, the latter of which I have been dying to go to for a couple of weeks already.

But looking at my productivity and my schedules, it seems that I have to forgo coming to these two events, unless a miracle happens within the next two days or so.

My apologies to my friends, to whom I’ve promised that I’d go for the PHP meet up.

Luckily I haven’t bought the tickets to the Airshow yet, otherwise I’d also need to find someone to hand over the tickets to.

From now on until the submission of my FYP draft, I’d have to be largely a hermit, and non-essential trips out of school/home will have to be restricted.

Hermit,
hendri

Translation:

Sundanese is my “regional” language (each province in Indonesia teaches its own “regional” language, something like mother tongue in Singapore). I learnt Sundanese from elementary year 1 to junior high school year 3. Because after junior high school year 3, I moved to Singapore. Even in the high school, we don’t learn Sundanese anymore.

It’s a very long time that I never use Sundanese in my daily life. It’s been 10 years plus. Not only write, I don’t even speak. Then why do I have to write in Sundanese?

I also don’t know. I just feel like doing it.

Writing in Sundanese is difficult, isn’t it? I have forgotten a lot of the words. In fact, I won’t be surprised if some words I use here are not even Sundanese. I don’t even know whether a word is “soft” or “rough” (terms used for “polite” words used to the elderly [”soft”] or those used in daily life [”rough”]. There is a third one which is neutral, but that only adds to the confusion now).

This entry is only until here… I don’t know what I’m typing now.

Pusing (which means “headache” in Indonesian, but “turn” in Malay),
hendri

PS: I think I can expect flaming from those who know the language. X-P
