So today I distributed flyers for Image|reel. It was also the first day ever I distributed flyers. So basically I just stood there trying to smile at someone while attempting to hand out the flyers to the said person. I had interesting responses…
- Chio JC girl: (takes flyer)
- Young businessman: (takes flyer) “Thank you.”
- Secondary school boy: (takes flyer) “Thanks.”
- British tourist: “No thanks.”
- Stone-faced housewife: (hesitates, reaches out when I retract, retracts hand when I reach out again, repeat.)
- Ah lian: (walks past without any response at all.)
- Ah pek: (smiles, takes flyer, has no clue what the flyer is all about, throws away the flyer in a nearby dustbin.)
- Lady with shopping bags on both hands: (just stares, probably thinking how the heck do I think she can take the flyer.)
- Some auntie: “Dowan.”
- Middle-aged guy: (appears disinterested, but takes the flyer anyway when he walks past me.)
- Dad of two: (shows the same flyer he has in his hand.)
- Bastard: “Got free goodie bag one ah? Oh got free movie ticket also? Got free food also or not? Got ah? Set.”
- Crazy cleaner: “bu4 ke3 yi3 zai4 che1 zhan4 pai4 chuan2 dan1″ (I proceed to say “I don’t understand Chinese”) “Oh, cannot distribute flyers in station one hor?” (continues to give me a five-minute lecture on how the police has told him that one can get fined for distributing flyers in the station and insists to tell me that there are two ladies in the station who are stubborn, despite me saying repeatedly that those two ladies are not from the same event as mine.)
Well, apparently the publicity was not good enough. Until early afternoon, there were at most 5 audience in the venue at any one time. In the end, the guest-of-honour arrived at the venue with only something like 3 people watching the animations we were showing. I wonder how the chairperson could manage to present the event to the guest-of-honour…
And then we took desperate measures. We cut out banners from last year’s event into pieces that we can wear like a pinafore, on which we stuck posters and wrote details of the event. So it looked like those wearable advertisement signboard thingie (not too sure what the proper term for this is). So, ladies and gentlemen, if you saw two retards wearing those wearable advertisement signboard thingie in front of Cineleisure today (14 May), I was one of them. Specifically, I was the one with a super-thick Habbo Hotel poster in front. (I was about to say ‘freaking thick’ but realised that if Habbo Hotel were to find out, they may get angry with us about it. Oops I just said it.)
I think got people take photo also. So if you see me in the papers tomorrow, don’t be surprised k?
Anyway, with this new gear, we had more, should I say, diverse responses.
- Ah beng: “Hahahaha…” (never takes flyer)
- Secondary school girl: (talks to friends, points at me from afar, tries not to laugh but bursts into laughter anyway when I hand her a flyer.)
- My partner: “They’re laughing at you leh.”
- JC guy: (looks at poster, looks at flyer, takes flyer)
- Some woman: (comes up to me from behind) “What is this ah? Can I have one please?” (takes flyer)
- Ah mah: “Siao gin na”
- Security: “Got license one or not ah? Those with tents one pay rent to be here, you know?”
And so ended my career as a flyer distributor. Not wanting to play with our luck with the security, we walked back to the venue of the event, the National Youth Park.
It was either that the rather-extreme publicity was worth the effort, or that people were only interested in the talks by the bigheads, but by the time we went back to the venue (just in time for the talks) there were more people than we had expected. So in the end, like they say, it was good.
Anyway, I met ET, GNL, TL, LL, BT, HCF at Somerset later for class gathering (I took a self-declared two-hour break). It’s been pretty long since we had the last class gathering, and, like many class gatherings before, not that many people turned up. We went to this café place at Cineleisure Orchard, very near to the venue of Image|reel. In the end, TYW and GY were the only two people adding on to the list of attendees, and by the time these last two came, I had to go back to the venue. Pity that I couldn’t be there throughout the gathering, but it was good to know that most of them are doing fine. Hopefully next time I can stay longer.
Oh anyway… Time to go to sleep. Tomorrow must wake up early again. Must not be like today, I woke up super late, then in the end must take taxi to the venue. No good for my wallet, man…
