CS—I’m Loving It!

Saturday, March 26th, 2005

One of the coolest parts and parcels of taking a minor in Communication Studies (or a major in one) is that you get to play with a lot of expensive gadgets that you wouldn’t dream of getting one yourself–because these are geared towards the broadcast industry instead of individuals.

DSR-PD150P and Tripod

DSR-PD150P Front Left

DSR-PD150P Right

You can see the Sony DSR-PD150P camcorder that I stole from the school’s studio in the pictures above. It’s so much better than the usual home camcorder–and much bulkier–as it has extra functions that a typical user won’t normally use–such as the zebra lines to indicate areas of overexposure and XLR audio input for external microphones. According to the tutor of CS202, it would cost a business a few thousand dollars to get one. Even though it’s only second-hand, you can imagine how much I can make out of this if I sell it… I just need to remove that stupid sticky NTU labels they stuck all over the camera and the accessories.

My next target is the Sony linear editing suite (no pictures yet as I’m not certain of the model number) which we’ll get to use next week. The suite can be used to edit DV tapes, for example to rearrange the shots taken into a contiguous piece with proper time coding. This would be a little more difficult as the unit is very bulky and weighs quite a lot–requiring it to be sold in a form of a large briefcase. This will be more worth the effort though as the Sony website lists linear editing suites at about USD 20,000. Although the model we’ll be using is not listed in the website, I believe the price for a new unit is somewhere there. So a second-hand one would bring me a wealth of at least SGD 10,000–quite a lot for students like me.

Oh well anyway… Time to go and plan for an escape in case it’s needed.

PS: Of course, I’m not that insane to brag about stealing stuff from others. I’m actually using the camera to shoot a movie about this undergraduate who got into trouble with the police for bringing in two wallets and a spindle full of pirated CDs as well as a few loose ones into Singapore all the way from Indonesia, starring myself. The protagonist got caught as he was walking out of Changi Airport’s baggage claim area. He was one of those unlucky ones getting caught by random checks. Unfortunately, that’s as far as I can tell about the plot. Filming is going fine and almost finished, and if I’m lucky enough I can get it broadcast on Mediacorp’s Channel 5 under the title “The Undergraduate Pirate”. In fact, I’ve shown Mediacorp the draft of the movie and they like it so much that they decided to lend me their linear editing suite for use the whole of next week.

PPS: Yeah, right. Actually, the camera is going to be used for filming of our one-minute video project for CS202 Visual Communication. Then the footages will be stitched together into a proper movie using the linear editing suite. Fun!

To say that I’m obsessed with “There she is!!” (a.k.a. “Tteotta”) and “There she is!! step 2. - Cake dance” is an understatement. I found out that there are English versions of the excellent movies. Get the English versions of “There she is!!” and “There she is!! step 2. - Cake dance” now! Just click on the link and download either the swf or exe file, extract it using your favourite tool (for example WinZip, Power Archiver, or IZArc), open the folder where you extracted it, and enjoy the movies!

Or if these instructions don’t make sense to you, just open these earlier, original versions of “There she is!!” and “There she is!! step 2. - Cake dance”! You’ll lose some translations in the movies, but they’re still cute!

Enjoy!

Ok, back to work now.

OMG I’m 20 Already?

Saturday, March 19th, 2005

While I’ve always been laughing at people who turn 20, I missed out the fact that I, too, do grow older. So when I turned 20 today, I was the one who was welcomed to the world of the ‘kepala dua’s (literally meaning ‘double-headed’ but actually refers to the number 2 as the first digit of the age).

Special thanks to Halim and Leroy for organising the celebration, and to (in no particular order) Vidy, Mbah Chan, Helen, Kemal, Henche, Anes-and-Enry (thanks Nes), Vera, Made, Nurman, Icha, Arlene, Yongky, Hans, Moja, Herry and Eddy for actually taking the time to be there. (Did I miss out anyone?) Thanks a bunch, guys! Sorry about the aquaphobic me! X-(

In fact, it was one of the few times that my birthday was actually celebrated like this after I graduated from primary school… Come to think of it… I think it was probably the first time ever since elementary school (we don’t call it primary school in Indonesia)… Since I entered junior high school, ‘celebration’ means treating some of my best friends–and that doesn’t happen every year either… Because my family in Indonesia doesn’t celebrate birthdays, and here in Singapore my birthday usually falls on the holidays (March one-week break in Secondary School and JC)… Wow, that’s quite a long time, man!

Anyway… Thanks to Udo and Halim (again) for the pencilcase! Love it!

Also thanks to all the 14 people who SMS’d me, 13 people who MSN’d me, one person who sent me an online greeting card, one person who sent me an email, one person who called me (through Leroy’s phone), and of course, not to forget, those who wished me birthday personally and those belated birthday wishes. Thank you, thank you all!

Not to forget Care2.com who automatically sends me a greeting card every year without fail and various other spammers who somewhat-disturbingly obtained my birthday. Thanks!

Thank you all for the remembrance!

Now let me succumb to the fact that I’m really ‘kepala dua’ already…

PS: Love the song “Happy Birthday to Me” by Bulldog Mansion, as featured in Cake Dance.

ACS Forever!

Sunday, March 13th, 2005
ACS Crest

In days of yore from western shores
Oldham Dauntless Hero came
and planted a Beacon of Truth and Light
in this island of the Main.

Here may it stand from year to year
emblem of grand endeavour
The regions round echo the sound
of A.C.S. forever.

(Chorus)
Sing A.C.S. forever more,
our A.C.S. forever.
God save our land and heaven bless
our A.C.S. forever.

Our students hail from China’s plains
and the Land of Rising Sun.
We have many sons from India’s strand
and the islands of the Main.

Our hearts our hopes our aims are one.
No discord e’er will sever.
We’ll stand together for the cause
of A.C.S. forever.

(Chorus)

It has been more than a year since I last sang the school anthem. (That is, discounting the times when I sing the anthem just for the sake of singing it).

That’s why when the anthem was sung once again that morning on 11 March 2005, I sang it (almost) the same way I did back on 8 December 2003–knowing that this might really be the last, last time ever I sing the song in a formal school occasion.

But what’s the occasion?

It was ACJC Founder’s Day. Finally, slightly more than a year after I collected that small slip containing the results of the ‘A’ Levels, I was there again in the college’s auditorium, attending a formal school function.

But this time, instead of being in school uniform, I was in a formal shirt, pants, and tie. (Being someone who doesn’t care much about my appearance, I only got hold of the pants and the tie one day earlier). And instead of being a student, I was there as a graduate.

I was there to receive a prize–something which I took quite as a surprise. I only realised that I was receiving a prize when Mr. SPA, my form teacher when I was in the college, called me one fine morning, awakening me from my slumber asking for more information about me.

Even more unexpected was the citation being made for every single recipient of the prize–the Yong Ngim Djin medal. And so there I was. Under the spotlight. In front of the entire school. My knees trembling. (I’ve never been a fan of being in front of so many people).

It was like a dream. And I know that if only my parents were here, they would have been proud–as they keep on saying in those SMSes they keep on sending within the week. Pity that they couldn’t make it for the occasion.

And so as the speaker ended with a “Ladies and gentlemen, Hendri Budi,” I walked to the VIP to receive the prize and realised something was amiss.

I was the only school-less person out of those whose citations were read!

Never mind about some missed competitions, but never once did I hear in the entire citation a word about where I am at the moment! While the other citations ended with “So-and-so is now reading Pharmacy at the National University of Singapore” or at least “So-and-so will be reading Chemical Engineering at Cambridge University,” mine ended with a “Ladies and gentlemen, Hendri Budi.” Aaargh!

But that’s alright. Maybe somehow the writer of the citation missed my school. Getting the prize itself is quite a miracle for me.

Another miracle happened in the morning of the day itself. I didn’t wake up late!

If I tell you that for the first 72 hours of the week I only slept for 11 hours, you’d know what I’m talking about. (No, I didn’t go to pubs or clubs. The workload was rather heavy for me this period of time). In fact, my only source of energy is depicted in the photo below… (I’m still recovering from caffeine withdrawal as I’m typing now).

Cans of Drinks

Moreover, nowadays I have this newfound skill of switching off my alarm clock… sorry, that’s two of my alarm clocks without me even realising it.

I’ve already calculated the time I needed to get to school, and had determined that it would be just nice to leave the hostel on taxi at 6.45 AM. So I set my alarm clock at 6 AM.

But what happened was not what I thought had happened. Apparently I had switched off my alarm clocks unknowingly at 6 AM, and went back to sleep.

When I finally came to at 6.10 AM, I had thought that it was only 5 AM. I lazed around, thinking that the alarm clocks would only ring an hour later.

And then as if it was a scene from a movie, a voice from above called upon me, telling me to check the time.

Well, no. Actually I was just curious whether I had received any messages through the night. And that was when I saw the text on the screen of my Nokia 3530: 06:17.

Sh00t!

Well, in the end though, I managed to prepare myself, called a cab, and reached school quite early. A little too early to my liking, in fact.

The previous night was another miracle. (Am I starting to talk Memento-like?). I realised that I didn’t have a matching pair of pants and tie for my shirt. So I digged up my memory and remembered that my roommate went to a tailor once in Holland Village.

So I went to Holland Village to get the pants and the tie I wanted–I believe there are other places nearer than that, but time was racing against me then! After getting a recommendation from the tailor and paying for the pants and the tie, I took a Comfort cab back to NTU for the last lesson of the day.

I realised something was missing when I walked off and I felt so light. That was when I realised I had left the plastic bag containing my shirt, pants, and tie in the cab! And the cab had already drove off with a new passenger.

Luckily somehow it just simply crossed my mind that I had the telephone number of Comfort booking service in my phone book. I dialled the number, and quickly read my case to the operator. The taxi driver shortly later on drove back with the passenger and my bag safely–although I had to compensate SGD 2 for the passenger.

Had I taken a bus then, the bag may not be where it was, and may even take days to return to myself.

Oh well, enough about me.

One thing that is special about coming back to school for this function was meeting friends and teachers who you haven’t met for quite a long, long time. From my class, there were myself, Chin Fung, Desmond, Terence, Shireen, Marcus-and-Jamie, and someone-who-is-in-the-same-university-but-seldom-seen Mars.

SA2 Founder's Day 2005

We also met and talked to some teachers, although I only got hold of one with Mr. Keith Tan.

(Photo stolen from Mars’s blog. Hope you don’t mind. :P)

Pity that I wasn’t in the last photo as I was talking to another teacher right next to the frame. So… there I was.

We had plans to go out to watch movie later on, but in the end we didn’t since the SMU people had lessons (I happily skipped the day) and the rest wanted to go home. Maybe another time…

All in all, I was glad to be back in ACJC for Founder’s Day. Although getting a proper outfit and tying a tie was truly troublesome, it was worth the trouble. Without the occasion, I probably would not have met some of the friends and teachers I saw there. I probably wouldn’t have found out that Mr. David Loh, the crazy scholarship officer we had when we were under the ASEAN scholarship in JC, was transferred to ACJC in the PE/CCA department.

One thing I might have regretted a little bit, though, was that I didn’t carry my camera with me, and as such I didn’t take any pictures to record the event. And there is no other time for this one…

Who Said What?

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

+ You know, I wanna get streamed to triple E next year.
- How come?
+ ‘Cos SCI and NBS girls are
chio-er.

So who said what? And what does being in EEE (Electronics and Electrical Engineering) has to do with NBS (Nanyang Business School) and SCI (School of Communication and Information)? Stay tuned…

bcc

PS: Lousy, lousy update. I’ve been busy since last week, and don’t have much time to blog. This entry will be updated as soon as I have the time. Stay tuned…

PPS: Yes, the layout is screwed.

PPPS: I think lack of sleep is starting to take its toll against me. The title really should have said ‘Who Said What?’ instead of ‘Who Said Who?’ previously.

Mozilla Firefox is Evil!

Friday, March 4th, 2005

Users of Mozilla Firefox beware. The Microsoft team has decided that Mozilla Firefox is a threat to Windows’s security!

In my opinion, though, it is more of a threat to Microsoft’s sales.

Nanaca Crash is a fun little Japanese game where you try to get a poor guy thrown as far as possible. The learning curve is a bit steep, with the instructions being in Japanese, but once we got used to the game, my roommate and I are addicted.

PS: The MS AntiSpyware image may be fake. I also use Mozilla Firefox and this is what I got.

Advice or Advise?

Thursday, March 3rd, 2005

According to this test, I’m at an “Advanced” level for usage of commonly confused English words. I got 93% score for Beginner, 86% for Intermediate, 100% for Advanced, and 66% for Expert levels. How about you?

Here’s another video to brighten up your day… Click on the picture to open the page containing the video:

Blocked Nose

Edit: The video has been removed. Search around the net if you want to view it. I named it “Blocked Nose”, and it’s from a Vicks advertisement. Thanks.

I still have a lot more good videos which I’d love to upload. Unfortunately, I only have 100 MB in the server, out of which I’ve used more than 50 MB. That means that after a while, old contents must be removed to make way for new ones. And that also means that this video will be removed after some time.

If somebody was willing to sponsor a new server for me, I’m more than happy to accept it.

PS: Yes, there was a longer entry posted this morning. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision to post it, which I re-thought about and removed afterwards. Anyway, the gist of the post was that despite my claim that I am a Yellow Alien, I really have a human side within me who has feelings too. Don’t worry about me “Look(ing) Down”, I’m not going to jump. Missing someone is another point of the removed post, but we shall not go into details on that now.
